FAQs

Your questions, answered

What is the typical timeline between grant identification to grant award?

This will vary from funding agency to funding agency.  However, on average, we’ve learned it can take anywhere between 6 to 12 months.  Identification takes about a month to find and confirm eligibility.  The application process takes about two months to gather everything for submission, and it can take an agency anywhere from 3 to 9 months to notify a recipient that they will receive an award.

How much time would the client need to commit?

It depends on a few variables.  What has been your experience with grants?  Is this your first application or your fifth?  Does this project involve 2 or 6 partners?  Which funding agency are you applying to?  Depending on the answers to these questions, your commitment could be either substantial or minimal.  However, before you commit to services, we can help identify what your commitment will look like.

How often should we be checking for opportunities?

We usually recommend checking every other month, depending on your funding needs.  You can also sign up for grant-specific listservs that will notify you when opportunities of interest are released.

Do you recommend a spray and pray approach?

No, this type of process can be very time-consuming and sometimes not worth the minimal reward.  We recommend being very strategic about the solicitations you apply for.  If you’re unsure what your strategy should be, reach out to our team, and we’ll be happy to guide you through the process.

How many grants should a group apply to in a year?

We recommend 2 to 4 applications per year, depending on the resources you have available to commit to the submission process.  Identifying and applying for grants can be time-consuming.  To optimize quality, we recommend submitting a smaller pool of applications to ensure a higher success rate.

What funding agencies has your group worked with?

We’ve supported applications and awards from Department of Energy (DOE), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Defense (DOD), Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), California Energy Commission (CEC), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH), New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Department of Human and Health Services (DHHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Justice (DOJ), United States Army/Navy/Air Force, Department of Education (DOE), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and many other federal and non-federal agencies.
